Visit the Botanic gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle

The wonderful world of botany.

Merano is famous for its beautiful gardens, which bloom in spring and create a world of special relaxation all summer until autumn. The Trauttmansdorff Castle gardens are certainly among the most beautiful sights of the art of gardening. This landmark is located in the immediate vicinity of our accommodation.

They are spread over 12 hectares, where more than 80 gardens are arranged, which are divided into 4 main Garden Worlds with plants from all over the world. The terraced gardens meander along the slopes and you can walk 100 altitude meters and discover interesting views of the surrounding nature and gardens.

"Its scenic location is unique: in the form of a natural amphitheater, it extends over an altitude difference of more than 100 meters. Trauttmansdorff blends into the natural landscape harmoniously, and unlike many other gardens mainly exhibits examples of landscapes from around the world, taking the connections between natural vegetation, climate, location and human interference into account."

The gardens of wonders

They can be described as gardens of wonders, where during a leisurely walk you can learn about Mediterranean plants, poisonous plants, created forests of the world, see the characteristic flora of specific continents arranged according to the model of natural environments, to carefully curated botanical gardens.The heart of the gardens are the terraced botanical gardens by the lake

"The Water and Terraced Gardens area is graced by stairways and water features that connect various levels, where there are interesting elements of European landscape architecture: spherically manicured boxwood, geometric plantings, and a maze evoke the Italian Renaissance garden. In the English Perennial Garden, the plant beds are also geometrically shaped but are not laid out in rigid patterns. You can smell and touch aromatic plants in the raised beds of the Sense Garden: the intense fragrance of English roses, Lilium regale and star jasmine permeate the air. At the foot of the terraces is the romantic Water Lily Pond. A dense planting of irises, daylilies and grasses encircles brightly colored water lilies. Flawless lotus flowers rise up out of the water and a dense palm forest fringes the shore; in the spring, camellias and azaleas bloom amid more than 200 hemp palms."
